Expat car-import — service shot
For expats & diplomats

Import your car tax-free into the Netherlands.

Are you an expat, diplomat, or moving (back) to the Netherlands? You often benefit from fiscal advantages under the so-called relocation scheme. If you meet the conditions you may be eligible for exemption from Dutch BPM (Tax on Passenger Cars and Motorcycles).

Moving from outside the EU? You may additionally be entitled to exemption from VAT and customs duties, potentially saving many thousands of euros. It's important to gather the required documentation and handle any export paperwork before your move. We guide you through every step.

Find out in under 1 minute whether you qualify for BPM exemption under the Dutch relocation scheme.

What clients say

I relocated from Germany to the Netherlands and Paul was such a great help in importing my car. Truly an end to end service, starting with an initial discussion call explaining the entire process all the way up to taking me to the RDW to register the car in my name. Paul also facilitated the application to waive the payment of BPM as I was moving from a different country. I was stress free the entire time while Paul did all the heavy lifting. Would 10/10 recommend to anyone wishing to import their vehicle to The Netherlands.

We used PC Auto Import to import our car from Switzerland and we could not be happier with the experience and result. Paul was incredibly professional — his communication, organisation, attention to detail and speed to get this done were outstanding. He has a great network as well and shared with us a trusted mechanic for future needs. A fantastic experience overall, PC are an absolute must if you’re thinking of importing a car into the Netherlands! 100% recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Questions around the moving-goods exemption.

Who qualifies for the moving-goods exemption?

You qualify if you have lived continuously outside the Netherlands for at least 12 months AND the car has been registered in your name for at least 6 months before the move. Not sure? Take the moving-goods exemption check at the top of this page.

Does the exemption also apply to diplomats?

Yes, with additional exemption possibilities. Diplomats and staff of international organisations can import under more favourable terms — we assess your situation and the applicable status treaties at no obligation.

How much do I save with the moving-goods exemption?

Savings depend on your car's age, CO2 emissions and catalogue value — depending on your situation, this can range from several thousand to tens of thousands of euros. We calculate a precise figure for your specific car during the introductory call.

Do I need to be physically in the Netherlands for the process?

We handle most of the process remotely, even while you're still abroad. For the RDW inspection (and for non-EU imports, also the customs clearance), the car must be physically present. For an EU import, a single appointment of about 30 minutes at our office in Amsterdam typically suffices, where we complete the moving-goods exemption declaration with you. For non-EU imports, customs clearance can take a full day — most clients therefore choose to leave the car in our storage so they don't have to wait. If you prefer to bring the car yourself by appointment for clearance and RDW inspection, that is also possible.

How long does the entire process take?

For a non-EU import, the moving-goods exemption is usually filed within half a day to a day. Because we handle customs in-house as a recognised customs office, we can move quickly. For an EU import, the exemption goes via the Belastingdienst — this typically takes about two weeks for the approval code, after which we complete the declaration within a few days. The RDW inspection follows.
